KETIDAKSETARAAN GENDER DALAM MEDIA: FILM “200 POUNDS BEAUTY” VERSI INDONESIA (2023)

Ahmad Fauzi Haq

Abstract

This research aims to describe the representation of gender in the 2023 Indonesian version of 200 Pounds Beauty using a feminist approach and to explore the complexity of gender inequality in popular media. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative, including film text analysis and literature review. The results show that the film highlights social pressures on appearance and objectification of the female body through the main character, Juwita/Angel, who undergoes a drastic physical transformation to achieve social acceptance and success in an entertainment industry dominated by unrealistic beauty norms. The research also uncovers gender power dynamics in the relationship between Juwita and Andre, illustrating how economic power and professionalism are often used to manipulate women. The film critically exposes practices in the entertainment industry that reinforce patriarchal norms and explores the social implications of unrealistic gender representations. Using feminist theory, this research provides insights into how media can influence perceptions and social constructions of gender. This research contributes to a broader understanding of how media representations shape collective views on gender and beauty and encourage more inclusive social change in society.
