Abstract

Background: Smartphone use among adolescents continues to increase along with the development of digital technology. Excessive smartphone use may lead to smartphone addiction, which can result in decreased learning concentration, a tendency to procrastinate on tasks, and increased academic pressure. These conditions may contribute to the development of academic anxiety among adolescents. Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between smartphone addiction and the level of academic anxiety among adolescents at SMKN 9 Tangerang. Methods: This study employed a quantitative analytic method with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of 356 eleventh-grade students at SMKN 9 Tangerang. A total of 87 respondents were selected using probability sampling with a proportionate stratified random sampling technique. The research instruments included a respondent characteristics questionnaire, the Smartphone Addiction Scale–Short Version (SAS-SV), and an academic anxiety questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman Rank test. Results: Most respondents experienced smartphone addiction, accounting for 71 respondents (81.6%). The highest categories of academic anxiety were no academic anxiety and moderate academic anxiety, each consisting of 23 respondents (26.4%). Statistical analysis showed p = 0.010 and r = 0.274, indicating a significant relationship between smartphone addiction and academic anxiety among adolescents. Conclusion: There was a significant relationship between smartphone addiction and academic anxiety among adolescents, with a positive direction and weak correlation strength.
