The Relationship Between Level of Hope and Relapse Frequency in Patients with Schizophrenia

Abstract

Background : Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder with global relapse rates reaching 50-92%. Relapse has significant impacts on patients, families, and healthcare systems. Patient hope is a psychological factor that potentially influences recovery and relapse prevention, yet research examining the direct relationship between hope and relapse remains limited. Objective : To analyze the relationship between patient hope and relapse frequency in schizophrenia patients at Grhasia Mental Hospital Yogyakarta. Methods :The study used a correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. A sample of 108 outpatient schizophrenia patients was selected using incidental sampling technique. Research instruments included the Herth Hope Index (HHI) questionnaire to measure hope and relapse data from medical records. Data analysis used Kendall Tau correlation test. Results showed that the majority of respondents had high hope 105 (97,8%) and low relapse frequency (88,0% 95). Correlation analysis showed p=0.001 (p<0.05) with correlation coefficient r=-0.307, indicating a significant negative relationship between patient hope and relapse frequency. Conclusion: The results of this study show that the higher the patients’ level of hope, the lower the frequency of relapse experienced.
