Focus and Scope

Muhammadiyah Journal of Legal Studies (MJLS) is a peer-reviewed academic journal committed to exploring the dynamic relationship between Islamic legal thought—particularly as developed within Muhammadiyah—and contemporary issues in legal development. Rooted in Muhammadiyah’s progressive, reformist interpretation of Islam, the journal provides a scholarly platform for critical discourse on the role of Islamic values in shaping modern legal systems, especially in the Indonesian context but also in broader global perspectives. MJLS publishes original research articles, theoretical and methodological discussions, as well as case studies that reflect on how Muhammadiyah’s legal reasoning contributes to broader conversations in legal reform, human rights, constitutionalism, environmental governance, social justice, and public policy. It encourages interdisciplinary approaches that link Islamic jurisprudence with fields such as sociology of law, legal anthropology, political science, and comparative law.

The journal is particularly interested in contributions that examine the impact of Muhammadiyah's fatwas, legal advocacy, and institutional practices in areas such as family law, criminal justice, constitutional reform, and ethical governance. It also welcomes critical reflections on the interaction between Islamic law and state law, the negotiation of legal pluralism in multicultural societies, and the role of civil society movements—like Muhammadiyah—in shaping democratic and inclusive legal cultures. By emphasizing Muhammadiyah’s engagement with both classical Islamic legal traditions and modern legal challenges, MJLS aspires to become a leading international forum for scholars, practitioners, and researchers interested in the evolving interface between religion, law, and transformative social change.

Peer Review Process

The Muhammadiyah Journal of Legal Studies (MJLS)employs a double-blind peer review process to ensure the highest standards of academic quality, objectivity, and integrity. In this system, both the authors and reviewers remain anonymous throughout the review process to minimize bias and uphold academic fairness.

All submitted manuscripts are initially screened by the editorial team to assess their relevance, originality, and compliance with the journal's scope and formatting guidelines. Submissions that pass the initial screening will be checked for plagiarism using reliable similarity detection software. Manuscripts with a similarity index exceeding 20% will be returned to the authors for revision or rejected outright, depending on the severity of the overlap.

Eligible manuscripts are then sent to at least two independent reviewers who are experts in the relevant field. Reviewers evaluate the manuscript's theoretical contribution, methodological rigor, clarity of presentation, and alignment with the journal’s aims. Based on the reviewers' recommendations, the editorial board will decide whether to accept the manuscript, request revisions (major or minor), or reject it.

The average review process takes approximately 6–8 weeks. Authors are encouraged to respond constructively to reviewers’ feedback and resubmit their revised manuscripts within the specified timeframe. MJLS is committed to maintaining ethical publishing practices and expects all parties involved—authors, reviewers, and editors—to adhere to international standards of academic integrity.
