ABSTRACT
This paper was prepared using a qualitative approach with a discourse analysis to review and discuss Maena dances performed at Nias traditional ceremonies in North Sumatra. Maena is a cultural dance that involves many participants. Because almost all Nias people are able to do this type of dance because it is easy to learn and has a simple movement pattern. As a cultural product, Maena is a sign of discourse with symbolic form and meaning. Thus, the analysis was carried out with the semiotics and discourse approach. As a result, Maena is not just a dance. Besides being a powerful literacy tool, Maena is also an identity within the cultural structure of the Nias tribe that is inherent in the way of life of the community, which carries moral messages for the purpose of education and paradigm transformation on the one hand and social criticism on the other. Maena fulfills the sign as a signifying order received by the people who in semiotic glasses contain expressive and emotive elements.
